A PORTRAIT OF GRIEF
THIS SERIES IS MY PERSONIFICATION OF GRIEF. IT IS MY allegorical representation OF THE PHYSICAL AND MENTAL SUFFERING THAT IS THE RESULT OF LOSING my father TO SUICIDE. THE WORLD TURNS ITSELF OVER. horizons border new distinctions. THE WEIGHT OF SILENCE is immeasurable in its vastness AND ULTIMATELY THE RELATIONSHIP FORMED BETWEEN THE SELF, the subconscious AND THE WORLD, becomes a path full of signs, blessing and hardship. To grow from unfathomable pain brings a fountain of strength. to give a voice to your grief exposes a chrous of elegies that illuminate a pure light inside a darkness.

After my father died, I planted two Verbena bonariensis seedlings into my favourite pair of his shoes that he wore throughout his life as a doctor. Verbena is derived from Latin, meaning ‘sacred bough’, in reference to the leafy twigs of vervaine, which were historically carried by priests, used in wreaths for druidic rituals, and for medicine. Their starlike violet flowers proceeded to extend towards the light even in the darkness; A symbol of the growth one encounters from the absence of a great love and the endurance of grief.
